Avoiding Division

Titus says concerning division, “But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned” Titus 3:9-10.

You note it, you avoid it, you might have to confront it, and then you move on from there. Division. What is the cure? In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul says “that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgement.” Now, we need to be on the same page. I think what keeps us on the same page is just going through God’s Word the way that we do: line upon line, precept upon precept. We’re not missing anything. What does it say in its context to be able to understand it? It keeps us joined together. That’s God’s heart. We need to walk in love, and the fruit of that — the fruit of the Spirit — is love, and there is self-control, and there is unity.

Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. Romans 16:17
