Not Under the Law but Under Grace
The law shows me that I am unrighteous. And what does it do? It drives me to Jesus. It makes me see my need for Jesus. It’s like a roadmap – it is a sign pointing to, You need a Savior, John. But Jesus came. He fulfilled the law. Because I am in Christ, I can now be justified and made righteous. The law was given through Moses, the Bible says, but grace and truth through Jesus Christ. Jesus said that I didn’t come to destroy the law, I came to fulfill it. Galatians 4:4 says, “But when the fullness of times had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoptions as sons.” The Bible says in Romans 10:4, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” And finally, Colossians 2:14 says concerning the law that Jesus has “wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” The requirements were the law.
I’m not under the law, but I’m under grace. And now, because of God’s Spirit working within me, I want to keep God’s law. I want to do what’s right in the sight of the Lord, and I have the power now to be able, through the Spirit working in my life, to do what’s right. The law of the Lord is perfect; it’s good. I want to keep it to the best of my ability. But, I realize it cannot save me because I could never keep the law perfectly. It is grace that saves me, and Jesus has paid the price the law demanded so that I could be saved.
