Understanding GOd’s Word
Dear Church Family,
The book of Nehemiah tells us, “So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense and helped them to understand the reading” (8:8). This is a model I seek to apply in teaching God’s Word.
At Calvary, we teach the Bible expositionally, chapter by chapter and verse by verse. First, we read from Scripture. Next, we study the Scriptures in their contextual, grammatical, and historical framework. Finally, we seek to find ways to apply the Scriptures to our lives. I believe this is the best way to learn the Bible. Topical messages are great from time to time, but a steady diet of topical preaching leaves one spiritually malnourished. Personally, I have found that going through the Bible expositionally covers all the topics.
There is a difference between teaching from the Bible and teaching the Bible. The result of faithfully teaching God’s Word to the people is evident as they went out “rejoicing greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them” (Nehemiah 8:12). The Word of God has the power to change people’s lives!
